Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book should now be addressed as “doctor” while on Nova Southeastern University campuses.
NSU President George Hanbury bestowed an honorary doctorate in humane letters to Book before she delivered a keynote graduation speech at the private institution’s Don Taft Center in Davie.
The degree is traditionally given to people who have distinguished themselves through significant humanitarian contributions.
Outside her work in government, Book helms Lauren’s Kids, an award-winning South Florida charity she founded in 2003 that helps prevent childhood sexual abuse and aids survivors, among other services.
Book said she is “humbled” to receive the honors.
