Unlike most state Representatives, three-term Republican Rep. Juan Fernandez-Barquin, who represents unincorporated Miami-Dade, won’t be hitting term limits – the Governor tapped him to succeed the Miami-Dade County Clerk of Courts who died in office on New Year’s Eve after serving 30 years in the role.

Fernandez-Barquin, an ally of Gov. Ron DeSantis, will be “Clerk and Comptroller,” assuming duties that the late Harvey Ruvin, a Democrat, had ceded to the Miami-Dade County Mayor, the Miami Herald reported.

The Governor’s Office did not return an inquiry about whether the remainder of Fernandez-Barquin’s Statehouse term will be filled by a Special Election.
