Sheriff candidate and Miami’s top cop hospitalized after self-inflicted shooting

Miami-Dade County Police Director Freddy Ramirez’s campaign to be the county’s Sheriff took an unexpected turn: He’s hospitalized in stable condition after shooting himself in the head off I-75 south of Tampa.

The Miami Herald reported Ramirez was visiting Tampa with his wife for a meeting of law enforcement leaders. Numerous outlets reported witnesses saw them fighting.

Ramirez and his wife were reportedly asked to leave the hotel before he pulled off the highway and shot himself.

Last year, Ramirez became the county’s top cop, overseeing both the police and fire rescue departments as chief of safety and emergency response.
