Schools reopen next week, and campuses across the Florida Keys are trying to lure teachers with promises of better pay and idyllic living.
On social media and its website, the Monroe School District is pitching “working where the world vacations” and offering starting salaries ranging from $61,500 to $97,700 – far higher than the $49,000 average pay incoming Broward and Miami-Dade teachers earn.
The extra money is needed. U.S. Census data shows it costs more to live in the Keys, where home values average $613,400 and median gross rent is $1,792 per month, both higher than in Broward and Miami-Dade.
