In the 1880s mail delivery ended in Jupiter on the northern boundary of present-day Palm Beach County. Folks that ventured further south had to wait for a schooner to deliver mail. To meet the needs of the growing population, the United States Postal Service contracted men to deliver the mail on foot.
Known as the Barefoot Mailmen, they traveled along the beach carrying a pack of mail. The hot journey often resulted in mailmen shedding shoes and some of their clothing to make the trek. They even had special accommodations for a lightweight canvas mail sack because of the heat.
