In the early 1920s, Edward “Ed” Leedskalnin and Agnes Scuffs were set to marry. The day before the ceremony, however, Agnes broke off the engagement, leaving Ed heartbroken.
Wanting to memorialize their love, Ed set to work creating a physical memorial to do just that. A painstaking 30 years later, he completed the coral and limestone structure to honor what would never be.
Once known as Rock Gate Park, the memorial is now a museum known as Coral Castle. Working alone, he sculpted 1,100 tons of rock to create the monument. It’s still a mystery how he transported the rock.
