Speed limit-enforcing cameras are coming to Miami-Dade school zones through a contract expected to yield $215 million in fine revenue over six years.
The county, which approved the deal this month, would get $144 million of that sum. RedSpeed, the company operating and maintaining equipment at up to 206 school zones, would get the rest.
Miami-Dade state lawmakers are pursuing related legislation.
A measure by Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez and David Borrero would call for a ballot question to ban red light cameras.
Another by Sen. Alexis Calatayud and Rep. Demi Busatta Cabrera would prohibit traffic cameras with Chinese parts.
