Harsher penalties for stunt driving, street takeovers on road to Governor’s desk

Legislation to further help police stop dangerous youth driving and street takeovers has a green light.

Lawmakers approved SB 1764, sponsored by Hollywood Democratic Sen. Jason Pizzo and Jacksonville Republican Rep. Kiyan Michael, to boost existing strictures enabling cops to use video evidence to fine and arrest people for stunt driving and drag racing.

First-time offenders who coordinate or participate in those sometimes fatal events will face $2,000 fines and a one-year license suspension. Subsequent violations carry far harsher penalties.

“These networks,” Pizzo said, “will likely result in the injury or death of your child or grandchild at some point.”
