Gov. DeSantis signs measure hiking penalties for street racing

Steeper penalties for deadly stunt driving, drag racing and street takeovers are coming July 1, following Gov. Ron DeSantis’ approval of legislation to stop rampant roadway recklessness.

This week, DeSantis signed a measure by Hollywood Democratic Sen. Jason Pizzo doubling first-time offense fines to $2,000 for coordinating or participating in those criminal street behaviors, plus a one-year license suspension.

Repeat violators will face far harsher punishment.

Police, especially in South Florida, issued 6,641 citations between 2018 and 2022 for street racing and stunt driving, Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles records show.

Nearly 28% of them were in Miami-Dade.
