Coral Gables group submits petitions to curb self-given City Hall pay bumps

by The 100 Companies

A political committee focused on getting three charter amendments on the Coral Gables ballot turned in its first batch of petition signatures from voters wanting a say in whether elected city officials get raises.

The group, Accountable Coral Gables, submitted 2,000-plus signatures supporting an amendment to require future voter approval for Mayor, Vice Mayor or Commission salary increases.

Coral Gables’ signature threshold is 3,215.

City Commissioners voted 3-2 in September to award themselves massive salary hikes. Mayor Vince Lago and Vice Mayor Rhonda Anderson voted against the raises.

Commissioners Melissa Castro, Ariel Fernandez and Kirk Menendez voted for the change.
