Miami-Dade Chief of Public Safety James Reyes, a Democrat, and Assistant Miami-Dade Police Director Rosie Cordero-Stutz, a Republican, led their respective Primary races in the April-May fundraising period for the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s race.
Reyes topped the now-15-person field with more than $150,000. Cordero-Stutz was right behind him with $147,000 collected.
Republican Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Sanchez placed third with $98,000. He also spent $183,500 – more than Reyes and Cordero-Stutz combined.
Miami-Dade has had an appointed Police Director rather than a Sheriff since the 1960s. A constitutional amendment voters approved in 2018 requires the post to return by next year.
