Fire trucks throughout Florida will soon have blue rear lights to supplement the red taillights seen on practically all vehicles nationwide.
There’s a good reason.
Lawmakers this year unanimously approved a bill, sponsored by Weston Democratic Rep. Robin Bartleman and Naples Republican Rep. Lauren Melo, allowing fire department vehicles of 12 tons or more to have blue back lights.
Previously, only police and prison vehicles could have them.
Research shows red and blue are the most visible illuminated colors. A 2004 Florida Highway Patrol study determined that red is most easily perceived in daylight, while blue is clearest at night.
