A final hearing is set over whether Maureen Saunders Scott, the aunt of former Rep. Joe Saunders, can run against him as “Moe Saunders” for the House District 106 seat representing northeast Miami-Dade.
Judge Robert Watson scheduled the hearing for Aug. 1, noting in an order that he is “mindful” of the Aug. 20 Primary and potential appeals.
Saunders, a Democrat, filed suit last month against Scott, a no-party St. Johns County resident, for what he called a “clear violation of Florida law.”
An elections law legislators enacted last year bars candidates from running under nicknames “used to mislead voters.”
