Garbage pickups in Miami-Dade are getting pricier.
After learning of a $39 million budget hole they could either cover by borrowing money or raising rates, Commissioners voted this week to increase collection fees 21%.
Chair Oliver Gilbert pushed the rate hike over the loan plan. It’s expected to increase annual fees from $547 to $662 per household.
The rate increase comes as Miami-Dade prepares to fund three new independent offices for Sheriff, Tax Collector and Supervisor of Elections. All were previously appointed by the Mayor.
Florida voters in 2018 approved a measure requiring all to be elected posts by January.
