Students still attend Miami’s oldest elementary school

by The 100 Companies

One of the earliest communities in present-day Miami was Coconut Grove. Originally settled on Edmund Beasley’s homestead land in 1868, the community needs grew and the first school in the area was founded in 1887.

What started in a small wooden building with 11 students expanded when local architect H. H. Munday designed Coconut Grove Elementary School. The first section of the current building was built in September 1911 with classes beginning in early October.

The school was the first public school in the current Miami-Dade County. Today, the school is recognized as the longest continuously running school in the area.
