On July 4, 1884, “The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World” was presented to Levi P. Morton (the U.S. minister to France) in Paris. The 225-ton statue was then disassembled and loaded onto a French Naval ship for its passage to New York Harbor.
The towering 22-story gift, presented to the United States from the people of France to mark their alliance during the American Revolution, spans 305 feet and 1 inch from the ground to the very tip of Lady Liberty’s triumphant flame.
October 2024 will mark 100 years since the historic site was designated a National Monument.
