Miami-Dade voters selected Republican Rosie Cordero-Stutz to serve as their first Sheriff since 1966, electing her over Democrat James Reyes in one of Florida’s most closely watched county-level contests.

Cordero-Stutz, Assistant Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), took 55.6% of the vote.

“I pledge to lead with fairness, transparency and unwavering dedication to every neighborhood,” she said. “This victory belongs to all residents of Miami-Dade.”

Cordero-Stutz, a 28-year MDPD veteran, beat 12 opponents to earn the job and notched endorsements from President-elect Donald Trump, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, and 27 active Florida Sheriffs, among others.
