Broward State Attorney Harold Pryor dropped criminal charges against ex-Miami City Commissioner Alex Díaz de la Portilla and lobbyist Bill Riley Jr., ending a year-long ordeal that was headed for trial in December.

Pryor announced that after a “substantial follow-up investigation and extensive depositions of witnesses,” his office concluded “there is no reasonable likelihood of conviction.”

Díaz de la Portilla, 59, and Riley, 49, were arrested in September 2023 on felony money laundering, bribery, unlawful compensation and criminal conspiracy charges.

Gov. Ron DeSantis quickly suspended the then-Commissioner, who nevertheless ran to retake his Commission seat the following month, but lost.
