Ex-state Rep. Frank Artiles and former Miami-Dade Commissioner Joe Martinez were found guilty this month in separate trials. One got a slap on the wrist.
Jurors found Artiles guilty of election tampering through a 2020 so-called “ghost candidate” scheme in Miami’s Senate District 37. He faced 15 years in prison but was sentenced to probation and 60 days in jail with credit for time served.
Martinez received a guilty verdict of unlawful compensation and conspiracy. He faces up to 20 years in prison for accepting illegal payments to sponsor county legislation.
Martinez’s sentencing will happen after Dec. 20. He denies any wrongdoing.
