U.S. Rep. Brian Mast of Palm City will lead the House Foreign Affairs Committee next Congress after outpacing others seeking the job before the House Steering Committee.
He’ll succeed Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican, in a role with pivotal influence over international relations.
A U.S. Army veteran who lost his legs while serving in Afghanistan, Mast was not considered a favorite to win the job. But he impressed Steering Committee members with his presentation this week.
His policy positions on Ukraine and Israel also align with President-elect Donald Trump’s.
Mast’s selection pends approval by the full House Republican Conference.
