Fort Lauderdale approves $2M payment to protester shot in eye with rubber bullet

Broward’s most populous city has agreed to settle a lawsuit with LaToya Ralieff, whom police shot in the eye with a rubber bullet during a 2020 protest over the murder of George Floyd.

The sum: $1.975 million.

Fort Lauderdale Commissioners unanimously approved the settlement, ending a two-year legal battle.

Ratlieff, 36, suffered a broken eye socket, nerve damage and a 20-stitch gash in her forehead that left a scar. Her attorneys said she suffers from migraines and mental trauma.

A police department investigation in December cleared the officer who fired the bullet of wrongdoing and determined the shooting was accidental.
