Republican U.S. Rep. Carlos Giménez of Miami has joined the Smithsonian Institution’s Board of Regents, and he’s clarified his priority for the nonprofit museum collective.

Giménez, the only Cuba-born federal lawmaker, said he will ensure that the stories of millions like him who fled from the island nation’s oppressive regime are told correctly.

“I look forward to working with my fellow board members to guarantee that the Hispanic, Cuban American and Cuban exile experiences are accurately portrayed and represented,” he said.

The Smithsonian is the world’s largest museum, education and research complex, spanning 21 museums and a National Zoo.
