Miami, Palm Beach airports buck trend of fewer air travelers caught with carry-on guns

Florida’s relaxed firearm laws and many concealed carry permits earned it the nickname, the “Gunshine State,” but that distinction is of decreasing pertinence at airports, new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) figures show.

For the first time in years, TSA officers discovered fewer guns in carry-on luggage in 2024 than the year prior. That followed a national trend.

Some hubs remained outliers. At Miami International Airport, gun discoveries increased from 74 in 2023 to 103 last year. Palm Beach International Airport saw an 11-gun uptick to 47.

Both were local records, but still trailed Orlando International Airport, where 150 guns were found.
