South Florida’s Winner and Loser of the Week

by katem

Winner: FIU

Florida International University secured $2 million for additional cancer research.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the state grant from the Casey DeSantis Florida Cancer Innovation Fund. It didn’t hurt that FIU’s new Interim President, Jeanette Nuñez, is DeSantis’ former Lieutenant Governor.

Loser: Cuban community

South Florida’s Cuban population lost a warrior this week with the death of former U.S. Rep. Lincoln Díaz-Balart.

The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute Chair passed away at 70 following a battle with cancer. “Lincoln’s legacy of achievement will endure for generations,” said a family statement shared by his brother, U.S. Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart.
