The House released its proposed 2025 budget this week, and it contains a relatively small earmark to ensure that when Miami-Dade hosts World Cup events in 2026, there won’t be a repeat of last year’s Copa América debacle.
Lawmakers proposed sending $500,000 to Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz for extra security at large-scale events, half the sum Miami Rep. Omar Blanco sought in an appropriations request.
Footage of last year’s event showed fans without tickets forcing their way into Hard Rock Stadium, entering through windows and other means. There were numerous arrests. The bedlam delayed the game by more than an hour.
