In a rare veto, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava reversed plans to remove fluoride from the public tap water, setting up a likely clash with County Commissioners who approved the change.
“I have listened to the dentists and medical experts and the message is clear: Water fluoridation is a safe, effective and efficient way to maintain dental health,” she said.
Commissioners voted 8-2 this month to discontinue Miami-Dade’s fluoridation program, one vote shy of what’s needed to overturn the veto.
Raquel Regalado, who voted “no,” said she is now seeking feedback from cities before a follow-up vote on the matter.
