Legislation passes to end Miami Gardens-North Miami Beach water dispute

by Sally Schroder

Legislation resolving a water dispute between Miami Gardens and North Miami Beach now awaits Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature.

Lawmakers overwhelmingly approved HB 11, which prohibits surcharges on water service if the source facility is in the receiving city.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Shevrin Jones and Rep. Felicia Robinson – both Miami Gardens Democrats – aims to stop North Miami Beach from charging Miami Gardens extra for water from the Norwood Water Treatment Plant.

North Miami Beach owns the Norwood plant, but it sits within Miami Gardens.

Miami Gardens sued in 2018 over the 25% surcharge, leading to a $9 million settlement.
