Miami-Dade Commission overrides Mayor’s veto, again moves to remove fluoride from water

by Sally Schroder

Following the passage of legislation banning fluoride in drinking water statewide, Miami-Dade Commissioners reversed Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s veto of a similar county-level measure.

Commissioners voted 8-4 to override the veto. Republican Raquel Regalado joined Democrats Marleine Bastien, Eileen Higgins and Micky Steinberg voting “no.”

Five members needed to vote “no” for the veto to stand.

Commissioner Rob Gonzalez, who sponsored the defluoridation legislation, said residents are “sick and tired because their government has been poisoning them.”

Miami-Dade has added a tiny amount of fluoride to its tap water since the 1960s. Nine out of 10 dentists back the practice.
