Republican U.S. Rep. Carlos Giménez is undertaking a cross-aisle effort to combat rising homelessness among women, children and survivors of gender-based violence.
He filed the “Women’s and Family Protection Act” with Democratic U.S. Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York.
The bill would create a dedicated federal funding stream for shelters and safe haven initiatives and update the definition of homelessness to include domestic violence survivors.
It would also enable direct grant funding to nonprofits for shelter, trauma care and housing services.
Giménez, who represents Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, called the measure “a step forward” in protecting the vulnerable.
