A Bay Harbor Islands project to construct a new Broad Causeway Bridge is getting $1 million in state funds, thanks to appropriation requests by Sen. Shevrin Jones and Rep. Fabián Basabe.
Lawmakers this month agreed to the set-aside, which will match $4.5 million in local funds and a $500,000 federal contribution.
A Florida Department of Transportation study on building a replacement for the 73-year-old drawbridge got underway in November 2022. And it’s desperately needed, Mayor Joshua Fuller told CBS News last year.
“We’ve been doing everything possible to maintain this bridge patchwork,” he said in August. “It only lasts so long.”
