Defying state admonishments, Miami Commissioners are advancing a controversial proposal to delay the city’s November election to 2026, effectively extending all elected officials’ terms by a year.
Attorney General James Uthmeier and Gov. Ron DeSantis warned against the move, which they argued requires voter approval.
Commissioner Damian Pardo is sponsoring legislation to make the change, which passed its first Commission vote 3-2 Tuesday. Commissioners Christine King and Ralph Rosado voted “yes” with Pardo.
Pardo and King were on the losing side of another vote approving an immigration enforcement agreement with ICE, which came after hours of community testimony opposing it.
