President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis toured the Everglades-based detention center dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” this week. The on-again, off-again allies agreed the 1,000 beds coming online there are only the beginning.
DeSantis said the facility, erected at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, “very well may” grow. State officials projected the facility could soon accommodate 3,000 beds.
Trump, who visited this week, suggested other states should follow Florida’s example on immigration.
“On any given day, Florida constitutes about 20% of all immigration arrests nationwide,” he said. “What I would just say is, don’t let Florida be the only state.”
