Attorney General James Uthmeier says Key West officials violated Florida’s ban on “sanctuary cities.” Now he’s saying they risk removal from office if they don’t reverse course.
Uthmeier threatened the City Commission this week with civil and criminal penalties if Key West doesn’t restore its agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“They have a choice: stop impeding law enforcement from enforcing immigration law or face the consequences,” he said.
Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a ban on sanctuary cities in 2019 allowing police to enter agreements with ICE. This year, he signed a new bill requiring their cooperation.
