Gov. DeSantis says he doesn’t know if Alligator Alcatraz inmates are being denied access to lawyers

Gov. Ron DeSantis has touted his involvement in Alligator Alcatraz, which opened this month on Miami-Dade County-owned land.

But when it comes to big questions like whether inmates there are being deprived of meetings with lawyers, he’s pleading ignorance while suggesting news outlets are manufacturing that narrative.

“I don’t know,” he said. “A lot of these are criminal aliens, and they will make claims. And then the media’s kind of running with it.”

The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups are suing federal and state officials, including DeSantis, over alleged due process violations at the illegal immigration lockup center.
