Tri-Rail faces shutdown without state aid, officials warn

by The 100 Companies

Tri-Rail could shut down by 2027 unless Florida restores funding slashed in its new budget, officials warn.

The commuter rail system, serving 4.4 million riders annually in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, lost $27 million in state support. Local officials say they can’t cover the shortfall.

“There’s simply no way,” Broward Commissioner Lamar Fisher told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Lake Worth Beach Commissioner Chris McVoy noted Florida had hundreds of millions to build Alligator Alcatraz, but not “$40 million for public transportation” in South Florida, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Tri-Rail runs on $150 million yearly, most of it subsidized.
