Elected officials in South Florida cities are pushing back against a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) mandate requiring the removal of rainbow-painted crosswalks by next month.
Key West and Delray Beach already received orders from FDOT by Wednesday, while Miami Beach expected one soon for its Ocean Drive crosswalk.
All vowed to fight the directive, arguing the designs are safe, symbolic of inclusion and defensible.
The orders follow guidance from President Donald Trump’s administration that roads “are for safety, not political messages,” and FDOT Assistant Secretary Will Watts’ memo stating that “non-standard surface markings, signage and signals” could jeopardize safety.
