Appeals court again denies Miami’s attempt to delay elections to 2026

by The 100 Companies

Florida’s 3rd District Court of Appeal has blocked Miami’s request for a rehearing over the city’s attempt to postpone its Nov. 4 election to next year.

It’s the third straight court loss for Miami. Judges have repeatedly sided with mayoral candidate Emilio González, who sued after Commissioners approved delaying the election without an OK from voters.

The latest decision Sunday follows earlier rulings that found the move unconstitutional.

Proponents, including Mayor Francis Suarez and Commissioner Damian Pardo, argued shifting to even-year elections boosts turnout and cuts cost. Critics called it unconstitutional, noting it extends current officials’ terms by a year.
