Federal Judge’s ruling sets off shuttering of Alligator Alcatraz camp

by The 100 Companies

Federal officials confirmed they’re complying with last week’s court order to stop sending people to the Everglades-based Alligator Alcatraz immigrant detention center.

U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams issued a preliminary injunction requiring state and federal agencies to stop housing detainees at the $218 million facility, which opened in July on Miami-Dade land.

Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe argued Florida violated federal law by skipping environmental-impact studies. U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody blasted Williams for siding with “activist litigants” and predicted Florida’s appeal would succeed.

Gov. Ron DeSantis predicted the federal government will reimburse Florida for the facility’s costs.
