U.S. Rep. Carlos Giménez said Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s capture and removal Saturday could have ripple effects across the region, particularly in Cuba.
The Miami Republican called it a demonstration of U.S. “capacity and capability” that may force authoritarian leaders to reassess their positions.
Giménez said he learned of Maduro’s ouster in a pre-dawn call from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who told him simply, “We got him,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
A longtime Maduro critic, Giménez noted reports that Cuba provided security for Maduro and said Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel may be rethinking his own situation.
