Lawmakers may revisit Florida’s film incentives debate through a proposed specialty license plate program.
Legislation by Miami Beach Republican Rep. Fabián Basabe would create the “Florida Film Legacy” plate, with proceeds from plate sales going to Feature Florida Partnerships, a nonprofit that aids local filmmakers.
Basabe said strong sales would boost projects while signaling public support for renewed involvement after the Legislature allowed Florida’s incentives program to expire in 2016.
Productions have since left for states with incentives, prompting industry criticism and unsuccessful legislative efforts to revive the program.
The bill would take effect Oct. 1 and require annual financial reporting.
