Miami Beach commits up to $120K to replace erased rainbow crosswalk with new one in park

by The 100 Companies

Miami Beach officials plan to install a replica of the city’s former rainbow crosswalk in Lummus Park, allocating up to $120,000 from surplus funds for design and construction.

Commissioners approved the project to restore the LGBTQ symbol using salvaged pavers removed last year by the Florida Department of Transportation, which ordered elimination of roadway markings tied to social or political messaging.

Supporters say the installation reaffirms Miami Beach’s commitment to inclusion while relocating it beyond Florida’s roadway jurisdiction. City leaders hope to complete the permanent display, restoring a landmark first installed in 2018, before Miami Beach’s Pride celebrations in April.
