Gov. Ron DeSantis has approved Democratically backed legislation aimed at protecting Spanish speakers from “notario fraud,” a deceptive practice where individuals falsely present themselves as legal experts in immigration matters.
The law, effective July 1, prohibits notaries public from using titles like “notario” or “immigration consultant” unless authorized and mandates clear disclaimers stating they are not licensed to provide immigration legal services. Victims can pursue civil action for damages.
The measure – sponsored by Boca Raton Sen. Tina Scott Polsky, Orlando Rep. Johanna López and Hollywood Rep. Marie Woodson – addresses a linguistic gap exploited by fraudsters that particularly affects Hispanic communities.
