Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book’s first ballot challenge is behind her. She was re-elected with a decisive margin Tuesday night, winning 60% of the vote.
Her challenger, former Broward County Commissioner Barbara Sharief, garnered 40%.
The rare sight of a legislative leader getting a Primary challenge made it one of the state’s most-watched contests with lots of negative ads. But, in the end, Book’s colleagues came from around the state to campaign by her side and won voter affirmation.
“This is not my victory, tonight belongs to each and every one of you,” she said. “… We’re just getting started.”
