Baseball purists love to refer to their sport as a timeless game. However, starting next year, that won’t be true.
Major League Baseball approved sweeping rules changes designed to speed up the game and increase scoring. The changes include a pitch clock, a ban on defensive shifts and larger bases.
There will be a 30-second timer between batters. Pitchers have 15 seconds between pitches and 20 seconds with runners on base. Pitchers who violate the timer will be charged with an automatic ball.
Batters must be ready to hit by the 8-second mark or be penalized with an automatic strike.
