Former Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez was once the presumptive front-runner in the Sheriff’s race. His top choice now is fellow Democrat James Reyes.
Ramirez withdrew from the race last year following a suicide attempt. This month, he endorsed Reyes, Miami-Dade’s Chief of Public Safety, for Sheriff.
“I am proud to be voting for him, and equally proud to stand alongside him,” Ramirez said.
Not everyone approved. Juan Perez, Ramirez’s predecessor as Director and a supporter of Reyes’ Republican opponent, Assistant Miami-Dade Police Director Rosie Cordero-Stutz, called the endorsement “a desperate move.”
“All it did is open wounds,” he said.
