A tent city is now spread across part of Islamorada housing police and soldiers Gov. Ron DeSantis deployed to the Keys to handle maritime migration from Cuba and Haiti.

The makeshift complex, which Islamorada calls a ‘Base Camp” and “NOT a migrant holding area,” is the result of an executive order DeSantis signed Jan. 5. The order activated the Florida National Guard and directed state police agencies to help the Keys respond to an “alarming influx of migrants.”

As reported by the Miami Herald, 200-plus soldiers and police were assigned to the Key under DeSantis’ order, which expires in two weeks.
