Miami-Dade Chief of Public Safety James Reyes – who oversees the county’s Police, Corrections and Fire Rescue departments – is running for Sheriff.

He’s the 16th person in the race and one of four Democrats now running for the job.

A Cuban immigrant, Hialeah resident and 23-year law enforcement veteran, Reyes spent most of his career with the Broward Sheriff’s Office, including four as its Executive Director.

“I learned early on that duty, service and community were not just words – they embody our values,” he said in a video announcing his campaign. “It would be my honor to serve as your Sheriff.”
