After years of trying, Republican South Florida lawmakers have passed legislation enabling first responders to establish a harassment-free zone around themselves while working in public.
The measure’s sponsors, Sen. Bryan Ávila and Rep. Alex Rizo, say it’s needed amid rising violence against police and difficulties that paramedics encounter at big events.
Critics like West Palm Beach Democratic Sen. Bobby Powell contend it’s an attempt to stop citizens from filming police.
Unless vetoed, the bill (SB 184) will make remaining within 25 feet of a first responder after being warned punishable by up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.
