Students in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties – three of Florida’s largest school districts – could enjoy a little more shut-eye alongside their peers in the state’s less populous areas.
State lawmakers are advancing legislation requiring school districts to set start times for middle schools no earlier than 8 a.m.
For high schools, the start time would be no earlier than 8:30 a.m.
The House on Friday passed its version of measure, which would go into effect July 1, 2026. A Senate bill (SB 1112) has two more committees to clear before going to a full chamber vote.
