Rep. Fabián Basabe is proposing Miami Beach use an Israeli process to replace unsafe structures.
Pinui Binui – “evacuation and construction” in Hebrew – removes tenants from outdated buildings and houses them elsewhere while developers demolish and erect new ones.
Tenants then move into the new building, which can house more occupants.
Basabe says it’s a “proven” policy the city should adopt. Mayor Dan Gelber and Commissioners Alex Fernandez and Kristen Rosen Gonzalez disagree.
“Forcing tens of thousands of our residents out of their homes would run afoul of all sorts of property rights,” Gelber said. “And where’s the money coming from?”
